Please add a custodian paid $12/hour cleaning the whole fucking office complex (who the boss doesn’t even give healthcare coverage to) for added accuracy
Let me stress once again that THIS is capitalism. Not “free markets”, not “advertising”, not “consumerism”. Those things predate capitalism by millennia.
Capitalism is about having a class that owns most of the capital (capitalists, in the classic definition, businessmen or investors in modern lingo), so they end owning the means of production (as in the tools and organizations needed to create value by doing any labor), so the people doing the labor yield to give them most of the product of their work in exchange of using those tools or being part of those organizations. So they end getting most of the profit from the people doing the work without actually doing anything themselves, just by owning the capital.
And the distinctions between this and honestly very similar premodern systems of land ownership as a premise for extracting value from agricultural labor include
1) a modified, more intensive understanding of abstract ownership
2) the workers are not expected to separate the owner’s share from the bulk of what they made and hand just that over, but to have no contact with, rights over, or possession of the actual product, and rely wholly on wage, dispensed through a separate pipe only after profits have been reckoned
3) somehow the owner’s share is now conceptualized as the opposite of taxes, instead of being conflated with them
4) like seriously aren’t you at least supposed to be paying for the army and roads with all this dosh wasn’t that the whole idea
The little RB statistics chart is so pleasant and stimmy to look at and I want to see what it looks like when it gets really REALLY huge because it makes me think of some deep sea lifeform
Their names were Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon. They were kept in the Royal Earlswood Hospital, formerly known as “The Asylum for Idiots”. Burke’s Peerage listed them both as deceased in the 1940s but Nerissa died in 1996 and Katherine died in 2014.
The hospital had no record of any visit from the family during the time the sisters were there, and they never received a birthday or Christmas card. They also received no money beyond the £125 paid to the hospital per year.
Nerissa Bowes-Lyon was buried in a pauper’s grave with a plastic marker and a serial number:
The family didn’t even buy her a headstone until a Channel 4 documentary highlighted the sisters’ story and showed the grave. None of her family had attended her funeral.
The Queen was reported to be “hugely distressed” by the airing of the documentary.
“Can I just say something in MY defense? We had to keep our disabled family members a secret, because then people might start to question whether my family has magic blood that makes us uniquely able to govern.”
lmao tumblr letting their users choose whether or not they want their likes to be public but then pulling a twitter 2.0 and showing your likes on your followers’ dashboards and specially saying who liked the posts in their new update, without the users’ consent or a way to turn it off, is actually pretty insane.
like how many times to we — the users — have to tell them we don’t want tumblr to be like any other social media platforms and that tumblr’s being different than twitter, instagram, tiktok is actually what makes us stay on this silly little site.
respectfully @staff you’re driving your users away. stop trying to “fix” things that are good and don’t need to be fixed. we want tumblr to be tumblr. we don’t want the site to be twitter or instagram 2.0
not dying of preventable diseases is actually one of my favorite hobbies
Because smallpox used to kill about 30% of everyone who caught it. The successful vaccine program run by the world’s medical community means that no one will ever die of smallpox ever again.
Because rabies is 100% fatal without a vaccine. No one needs to die of rabies ever again. It is entirely preventable.
Because 1-2 in 1000 who get measles, die. Vaccines let us contain outbreaks or fully wipe them out. There is no specific treatment for the disease once you have it. Your immune system either wins or you die.
We like vaccines because vaccines save lives and raise our standard of living.
My mother, now in her 70s, talks about how her mother wept for joy when her children received the polio vaccine. Because she didn’t have to be afraid of polio anymore.
A 2019 study found that measles can cause “immune amnesia”, cutting your antibodies by 10%, up to almost 75%. Meaning, you’ve become that much more vulnerable to a whole slew of illnesses that you used to be protected from, and it doesn’t matter if you acquired the antibodies via a vaccine or recovering from an illnesses - they are gone. All those shots you got as a baby? The boosters you got through grade school and as an adult, including the annual flu shot? Guess what: measles most likely wiped your body’s immune memory of those and you’ll have to get them all. Over. Again.
I think I just accidentally became someone’s loan shark??
Okay it sounds bad but bear with me:
Someone owes me a significant amount of money, and has made it clear that they do not intend to pay me back.
I sent them one text to follow up about it around two months ago, letting them know that I wasn’t stressed about it and I could wait or do installments if they needed time or things were rough, and they promptly blocked my number and deleted me on social media.
I was kinda bummed, but then, you know. I figured, it’s a lot of money, but at least they’ve removed themselves from my life, right? If I were to choose between thinking someone like that was a reliable friend or paying a lump sum for the trash to take itself out, I could make peace with it. Whatever. Live and learn.
So, I haven’t seen them in a few months. Cool. But then I was walking downtown and I see someone out of the corner of my eye just sitting around, having a drink. Don’t know who, don’t know what. Not paying attention, yeah? I’m living my life.
But as I get closer to walk past them, I see them get up and start booking it. And as I turn to figure out what’s up, why is someone running, I recognize the back of their head, and as they look over their shoulder, we make eye contact, and then they’re gone.
And I realize
I just got off work. I’m power-walking in what could ostensibly be interpreted as their direction. They look up and see someone they ghosted, who they have screwed monumentally, coming at them with a hundred-yard-stare and what they may not know is a regular resting bitch face. I don’t even care about the money anymore, I’ve accepted it as a loss, but they blocked me on everything so they don’t know that. And they went, “fuck this shit, not today” and dipped.
And that would be funny on it’s own, but we do not live in a large, heavily-populated area. It’s definitely going to happen again. So my question is this:
How long are they going to let themselves live in fear of my stumpy 5'3" ass hunting them down like John Wick or the devil himself before they snap
My activity page did a thing XD. I agree with both tho - it’s lovely when people are kind to each other! It’s fucking hellish that you can’t just plug in to a printer and fucking use it.
LAPD detonated 5000 lbs of fireworks in the middle of a residential area, injuring at least 17 people and causing $900 million in various damages in a low-income, majority-POC neighborhood.
They then continue to pursue caging the person whose fireworks they stole while news media misreports to cover for police incompetency and destruction.
It took TWO YEARS to get the names of those involved with this incident. There are people still protesting, still living in hotels, still with unfulfilled claims to the city from this shit
